Malawian farmers now have a proven ally against the season’s toughest conditions. SeedCo has officially launched SC 449, a new drought-tolerant hybrid maize variety built to deliver strong harvests even when the rains fall short.
The launch took place over two days, August 28–29, at Country Club Limbe in Blantyre, where the variety was unveiled during a golf tournament that brought together 200 golfers, executive leaders, and traditional dignitaries — a fitting celebration of sport and agricultural innovation side by side.
SC 449 is designed with the realities of a changing climate in mind. It matures in just 90 days, making it ideal for short rainy windows and winter cropping, and delivers yields of up to 60 bags per acre. The variety also carries built-in tolerance to maize streak virus and features a semi-flint grain structure that produces sweet, green mealies — combining resilience with quality farmers can taste.
This launch comes at a critical time. El Niño-induced dry spells are already forecast to affect the region, and the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) has warned that 23 districts across Malawi are at risk. Uncertain rainfall patterns mean farmers need solutions that can perform under pressure — not just survive it.
SeedCo brand ambassador Inkosi Ya Makhosi Gomani V affirmed the timeliness of the innovation: “This is a great opportunity for our farmers. We are warned about the dry spells due to El Niño, and we need to make plans to maximize our harvests even in such conditions.”With SC 449, that plan is already in farmers’ hands. Whatever the season brings, Malawian farmers now have a variety built to help them harvest more, not less — because at SeedCo, it starts with the right seed. Home of Bumper Harvests.
