Chisamba, Zambia – The 2026 Agritech Expo opened with a strong call for increased agricultural productivity, innovation, and resilience, as Zambia continues to navigate the realities of climate variability and rising food demand.
Speaking on behalf of the President of the Republic of Zambia Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, Minister of Agriculture Reuben Phiri Mtolo emphasized the need to scale production and adopt modern farming practices.
Central to this message was the importance of moving beyond seasonal farming through irrigation, improving access to mechanisation, and embracing technologies that can sustain productivity even under challenging climatic conditions.
“Zambia has recorded a maize harvest of about 3.9 million metric tonnes, indicating the strength and commitment of farmers across the country,” he stated.
These priorities closely mirror the direction taken by Seed Co Zambia, whose presence at the Expo reflected a deliberate focus on practical, farmer-centred solutions.
Through continuous engagement with farmers, the company is enabling access to real-time agronomic knowledge, improved seed varieties, and support systems designed to drive consistent yields and long-term resilience.
Meanwhile, the Honourable Minister also took time to visit the Seed Co Zambia stand, where he was hosted by Seed Co Zambia Managing Director, Mrs Grace Bwanali.
During the visit, he witnessed the two newly introduced innovations, Canova F1, a high-quality hybrid tomato variety, and SC 561, an early-maturing and climate-smart maize hybrid developed to perform under diverse environmental conditions.
The introduction of these varieties reflects Seed Co Zambia’s continued investment in research, innovation, and farmer success, aligning closely with national aspirations to increase production while improving efficiency and sustainability.
The Expo’s theme, “Technology. Transformation. Trade,” finds clear expression in Seed Co Zambia’s approach. Technology is embedded in the science behind its seed development and the growing integration of digital platforms that support farmers with timely information, trade, and access.
Transformation is evident in the shift towards higher-performing, climate-resilient varieties such as SC 561 and Canova F1, enabling farmers to move from uncertainty to productivity. Trade, in turn, is realised through improved yields and quality, positioning farmers to actively participate in broader markets, and e-commerce with confidence.
As Zambia pushes towards higher production targets and a more resilient agricultural sector, Seed Co Zambia continues to play an important role, bridging innovation with on-the-ground impact and ensuring that farmers are equipped not just to plant, but to produce, grow, and thrive.
