Regional Product Portfolio & Agronomy Manager
Dr. Godfred Afrifa Owusu is the Regional Product Portfolio and Agronomy Manager for Seed Co West & Central Africa (WECA), based in Accra, Ghana. In this role, he leads product and market development for maize and other key crops, overseeing the evaluation, commercialization, and lifecycle management of both Seed Co and Limagrain varieties across the West and Central African region. His work directly supports regional seed system strengthening, farmer productivity, and agribusiness competitiveness.
Before joining Seed Co WECA, Dr. Owusu worked as a Research Associate (2017–2019) with The African Seed Company Ghana Ltd where he conducted, and collected data on trials involving Seed Co varieties. Between 2014–2016 and 2018–2021, he conducted field research for his Master’s and PhD studies at the CSIR–Crops Research Institute (CRI) in Kumasi. His passion for crop improvement was nurtured earlier during his National Service at CRI, which motivated him to pursue an MPhil in Plant Breeding at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). Due to his strong academic performance, he served as a Graduate Assistant in the Department of Crop & Soil Sciences (2015–2016) KNUST, where he supported his colleague students in field experimentation, data collection, and student thesis writing.
Dr. Owusu brings extensive expertise in breeding field crops particularly maize, soybean, and rice—gained through years of research, field trials, and multi-location product testing. Prior to assuming his current role, he served as Regional Sales Agronomist (2021–2024) for Seed Co WECA, supporting product positioning, farmer engagement, and commercial business expansion across the region.
He holds a PhD in Plant Breeding from the Pan African University of Life & Earth Sciences (Health and Agriculture), University of Ibadan, Nigeria. His doctoral research focused on developing high-yielding tropical maize hybrids adaptable to drought and low-nitrogen environments, contributing to improved food security and climate-resilient agriculture in West and Central Africa.
As a scientist working within in a commercial agribusiness environment, Dr. Owusu is currently pursuing an MBA in Project Management at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), expected to be completed in June 2026.
Dr. Owusu has authored five scientific publications in reputable international journals and presented three conference papers, all addressing food security, crop productivity, and plant breeding innovations in West & Central Africa.
He is proficient in English, Asante Twi, and French (A1 DELF certification). His long-term career aspiration is to become a distinguished Research Scientist and Business Project Manager, contributing to crop improvement, agribusiness development, and the sustainable growth of agricultural innovations across Africa and beyond.
