SC 608

High-yielding yellow dent, versatile for grain, silage, stover and winter green maize

Product Overview

About SC 608

Why choose this variety?

High-yielding yellow dent, versatile for grain, silage, stover and winter green maize

Botswana: SC 608 (TAU) is a medium-maturing yellow maize hybrid that reaches physiological maturity in approximately 128 days, with green mealie at 98 days, silage at 113 days and grain harvest at approximately 148 days. It has a high yield potential of up to 12 tonnes per hectare. SC 608 has good heat and drought tolerance, moderate tolerance to Maize Streak Virus, good tolerance to Grey Leaf Spot and cob diseases, and very good standability. It is particularly suitable for livestock feed, yellow-grain production, green mealies and silage, making it a versatile option for mixed farming systems.

Zambia: SC 608 is a medium-maturing yellow maize variety, reaching maturity in approximately 130-136 days. It produces yellow, dent grain and has a yield potential of 12-13 tonnes per hectare, equivalent to approximately 240-260 × 50 kg bags. It has tolerance to Grey Leaf Spot and Northern Corn Leaf Spot and good tolerance to Diplodia and Fusarium. Its drought tolerance and standability are both rated moderate. SC 608 is highly versatile in terms of use and can be grown for summer grain and silage, cattle stover, winter green maize and winter silage.

DRC: SC 608 is a medium-maturing maize hybrid with yellow dent-textured grain and a yield potential of up to 15.1 tonnes per hectare in a good season at a plant population of approximately 53,000 plants per hectare. It reaches physiological maturity in about 135-140 days at altitudes of 1,100-1,300 metres above sea level. The hybrid has a plant height of approximately 2.6 metres and a cob height of 1.4 metres. With wide regional adaptation, SC 608 is recommended for Seed Co Pan-African zones 4, 5, 6 and 7, as well as irrigated production. Seed treatment is recommended in areas with high maize streak virus (MSV) pressure. It is suitable for green mealies, with cobs offering a long shelf life, and is also a good option for silage production. SC 608 can withstand plant populations of up to 53,000 plants per hectare and is commercially available in Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi.

Zimbabwe: SC 608 – Medium-Maturing Yellow Maize Hybrid: SC 608 is a medium-maturing yellow maize hybrid that reaches physiological maturity in approximately 138-148 days, depending on altitude. It has a yield potential of up to 15.1 tonnes per hectare. It is suitable for green-mealie production and has a long shelf life. The hybrid also produces large cobs with dent grain texture, distinguishing it from the white-maize hybrids in the portfolio.
