Product Overview

About SC 555

Why choose this variety?

High yield potential with strong drought tolerance; suited to roasted and green maize.

Botswana: SC 555 (PITSE) is an early-maturing white, hard-dent maize hybrid that reaches physiological maturity in approximately 136 days and has a yield potential of up to 8 tonnes per hectare. It has excellent cobbing ability, including large and long cobs, approximately 14-16 kernel rows and a shelling percentage above 80%. SC 555 has excellent heat and drought-stress tolerance, good tolerance to major maize diseases and Grey Leaf Spot, strong stay-green characteristics and excellent standability. It is also suited to short rotations and double-cropping systems such as maize-wheat rotations.

Malawi: SC 555 Mbidzi is an early maize hybrid maturing in approximately 115 days. It produces white, hard dent grain and has a yield potential of 10 tonnes per hectare, equivalent to approximately 200 × 50 kg bags. It has tolerance to GLS, NCLB and MSV. Uses include summer grain, cattle stover, green maize and winter green mealie . It is matched to Zones 2, 3 and 4.

Nigeria: SC 555 is an early-maturing white maize variety with a maturity period of approximately 85-90 days. It produces white, dent grain and has a yield potential of approximately 9.5 tonnes per hectare. It is adapted to Forest and Savanna ecologies. SC 555 has stay-green characteristics, good standability and resistance to Maize Streak Virus, with tolerance to blight and Curvularia leaf spot. Its recommended seed rate is 25 kg per hectare.

Zambia: SC 555 is an early-maturing white maize variety that reaches maturity in approximately 127-130 days. It produces white, dent grain and has a strong yield potential of 10-12 tonnes per hectare, equivalent to approximately 200-240 × 50 kg bags. It has tolerance to Grey Leaf Spot and Northern Corn Leaf Spot and moderate tolerance to Diplodia and Fusarium. SC 555 has very good drought tolerance and very good standability. It can be used for summer grain, cattle stover, winter green maize and winter silage.

Kenya: SC 555 (Punda Milia 555) is listed for Kenya as a early maize variety. The source gives 120-130 days to maturity, 38-45 yield per acre, white grain, drought tolerant: Yes, zone adaptation 2-5, and adaptation/attribute: Nutrients Use Efficiency.

DRC: SC 555: An early maturing, white grain variety (127-130 days) with a potential yield of 12 tonnes per hectare. It has reported tolerance to grey leaf spot and northern corn leaf blight, very good tolerance to Diplodia and Fusarium ear rot, and good drought tolerance. Its standability is rated moderate. The brochure lists it for summer grain, livestock fodder, winter maize, and winter silage in all zones.

Zimbabwe: SC 555 – Early-Maturing Maize Hybrid: SC 555 is an early-maturing maize hybrid that reaches physiological maturity in approximately 130-137 days, depending on altitude. It has a yield potential of up to 12.5 tonnes per hectare. Its key traits include wide regional adaptation, a high shelling percentage, and a strong stay-green characteristic. This confirms that SC 555, rather than SC 355, is the correct hybrid to use in the Zimbabwe Variety Finder.

Mozambique: SC 555 is presented as a new very-early maize hybrid in the Mozambique brochure. It has yield potential of up to 14 tonnes per hectare at about 55,000 plants per hectare under a good season and reaches physiological maturity at approximately 135 days.
