The tone has changed now to pea’s production. Prime Seed reminds the farmers as the time for peas production has come. In stock the company boasts its self with sufficient peas seed be it mange tout, sugar snaps and shelling peas.

Mange tout peas are full-grown in Zimbabwe. Most mange tout seeds take 60 days to mature after planting. The best time to grow peas in our country is from mid-April until mid-October. This pea variety is a green, pod-shaped fruit. This variety is also an open field pea or grown outdoors, not in greenhouses with the plants growing best at temperature of 13 - 18 °C. They do not flourish in the summer heat of warmer temperature and lowland tropical climates but grow well in cooler high altitude tropical areas during the dry winter season.

Sugar Snap peas are different from Mange tout peas in that their pods are round as opposed to flat. Sugar Snap peas like other peas are a pod fruit. The soft and tender pods of Sugar Snap peas are crisp and sweet.

Prime Seed has brought good news to farmers who used to produce the old shelling pea variety called green feast. This we have replaced it with a Lincoln. This variety of pea is ready in 70 days, good heat tolerance, each pod averages 7-8 large peas, sweet and tender, freezes well, plants average 2-3 feet tall and far much better than the green feast in terms of yield.

Climatic and soil Requirements

Peas can be grown under different weather conditions. They can be produced in cold and dry environment conditions. Yields go high on prolonged cold spell. Pea seed can easily germinate at very low temperatures of about five degrees Celsius though they take long. The best temperature for pea’s germination is about twenty-two degrees Celsius. The higher the temperatures the rapid the germination.

Well- drained sandy loam soils rich in organic matter are the most optimum, as they enhances better growth by supplying crop  nutrients. The crop does well in soils with pH of 6.5.

Crop Protection

For nematodes problem Prime Seed prescribes famers to use Solvigo 108SC. There is no need for peas farmers to worry much on diseases like Ascochta, Downy and Powdery Mildew as our cost effective chemistry of Ortiva 250SC and Amistar Top 325SC all available at Prime Seed can be applied respectively.

Nutritional Value

Pea is an important nutritious leguminous vegetable that is widely cultivated throughout the world. . It is a rich source of proteins, amino acids, sugars, carbohydrate, vitamins A and C, calcium and phosphorous, and also has a small quantity of iron.
